Science? Terrifying! Futurama? Wonderful! Using one to make the other make sense? Exactly what we're about to do. Yes, it's probably impossible to explain the Higgs boson discovery with an Internet comedy writer's knowledge base and a set of GIFs from a cartoon show, but dammit we're going to try, because the only alternative is studying particle physics for 45 years.

How It All Got Started

Our story begins in the old days…

…of 1964, when theoretical physicist Peter Higgs (among others) determined that the Standard Model of particle physics lacked a boson (a class of fundamental elementary particle) to give other particles weight. They published papers about this, after lots and lots of consideration…

…but their ideas were all theoretical, because no one was able to actually pin down a real-life example of what became known as a "Higgs boson"…

…and it seemed like it would be nearly impossible to find one, and require breaking the rules of what scientists knew was possible in terms of examining tiny particles.
